Twilio Client for Android is out; Lets developers add VoIP capabilities to their apps

Cloud communications company Twilio launched Twilio Client (SDK) for Android, making it super-easy for mobile developers to integrate VoIP capabilities into their Android apps.

Among the features developers will be able to access are:

  • Real-time presence with buddy list support – the Twilio platform will notify an app when a user is ready for voice chat so that calls are only made when users are online.
  • App backgrounding – the SDK can receive voice calls even if the app is not the current one being used.
  • Cross-platform interoperability – Twilio Client supports Android, iOS and web browsers, allowing for calls between platforms without issues.

So what do you say? Presuming you’re a developer – does your app needs VoIP capabilities? If so, check out this page and take it from there…

In related news, Twilio also announced that they will be hosting their second annual TwilioCon on October 16, 17

Cricket’s Muve Music expands its catalog with 2 million songs from TuneCore

Cricket has teamed-up with TuneCore, which is the largest distributor of digital music with “one of the highest revenue-generating music catalogs in the world.” As a result, Muve Music‘s library will be increased by up to 2 million tracks, while TuneCore artists will get access to over 600,000 Muve Music customers.

Under the deal, Cricket will obtain the rights to both the recordings and songs represented by TuneCore and will pay royalties directly to TuneCore, providing artists and song writers with an “efficient, transparent and timely royalty collection system.” Not that we actually care about that part, though.

The part we do care about is when Muve Music customers will be able to access the new songs. Cricket said that the phased rollout will start immediately and is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

The Muve Music plan is available with few Cricket handsets, including Huawei

Asus working on a notebook with integrated projector?

Not exactly a “mobile” story but interesting nonetheless…

For some reason some hardware (smartphone) makers like Samsung think some people will dig handsets with integrated projectors, but what about laptops? The way I see things, it’s more natural to have notebook rather than smartphone with such a capability. First of all, the battery will last longer and most users (read: all) still use laptops for presentations — rather than smartphone, even though that’s also an option.

Asus thinks it has what it takes to make such product or at least their patent application suggests so. The Taiwanese company wants to protect not one but two different laptop designs with built-in projector, both of which are illustrated below.

Amobee acquires AdJitsu to add third dimension to mobile ads

Mobile advertising company Amobee is acquiring AdJitsu to accelerate the innovation of interactive 3D mobile ads. AdJitsu is a wholly owned business unit of Cooliris.

The rest of the pitch goes like this (from the press release):

With AdJitsu’s technology and product suite, Amobee will collaborate with ad networks, premium publishers, brands and agencies to create highly engaging and differentiated 3D mobile ad units. Mobile users can tap on the ad and engage with 3D models of advertisers’ products with unmatched interactivity, speed and animation. Furthermore, AdJitsu’s technology has the unique ability to transform existing 2D ad assets into interactive 3D campaigns, which result in impressive click through rates and higher revenues for advertisers and publishers.

In case you wonder, the terms of the deal were not disclosed…

Our take: it’s good to see mobile ad space consolidating, though I’m not sure we’ll love 3D ads more than

The mobile payments wars [Infographic]

Mobile payments are not the future – many users all around the world are already paying for goods and services with nothing but their phones. So how did we get here – from cash, checks and credit cards to mobile payments? That’s a nice story which I’m not gonna share here. Rather I’ll let you see it with your own eyes, from the infographic below. But first, here are few figures to keep in mind:

  • By 2015, mobile POS will process some $670 billion
  • Contactless payments will account for $320 billion by 2016
  • 40-90% is the amount that carriers deduct from direct carrier billing
  • PayPal currently processes $315 million per day

And now the infographic, prepared by the good folks of Voucher Codes.
