Dolphin Browser scores pre-install deal with Japan’s KDDI

Dolphin Browser, which is already the single most used third-party web browser for Android and iOS platforms (and my favorite browser in case you ask), is turning to East for further expansion. The company announced a pre-install deal with Japan’s major mobile operator – KDDI.

As a result, Dolphin Browser will be pre-loaded on future, un-released Android-based phones, allowing Japanese smartphone subscribers to easily download Dolphin Browser for free through KDDI’s mobile app store, au Smart Pass, which has over 1 million members.

Dolphin Browser has been download for more than 16 million times and with this new partnership, we’re pretty sure they’ll double the user base in no time at all. Although KDDI’s app store has “just” 1 million members, its customer base counts 30 million users…

Wikitude brings augmented reality to the mobile web

Wikitude, which is one of the Augmented Reality pioneers, wants to bring the technology to even more users. Their new solution, called “AR window,” enables any mobile webpage to include Augmented Reality content.

According to the press release we got, using this technology mobile web pages will be able to open up smartphone’s camera view so that users can view the live video stream with additional augmented content on top of it. Wikitude’s CEO Martin Lechner said that this will allow users to “interact directly with the real world while browsing the web.”

Sounds cool and kinda scary at the same time — i.e. I’m not sure I want to interact with web pages that way, though I could be wrong on this one.

We have a demo video to show you how that works in real life. Check it out and let us know what do you think

Twilio Client for Android is out; Lets developers add VoIP capabilities to their apps

Cloud communications company Twilio launched Twilio Client (SDK) for Android, making it super-easy for mobile developers to integrate VoIP capabilities into their Android apps.

Among the features developers will be able to access are:

  • Real-time presence with buddy list support – the Twilio platform will notify an app when a user is ready for voice chat so that calls are only made when users are online.
  • App backgrounding – the SDK can receive voice calls even if the app is not the current one being used.
  • Cross-platform interoperability – Twilio Client supports Android, iOS and web browsers, allowing for calls between platforms without issues.

So what do you say? Presuming you’re a developer – does your app needs VoIP capabilities? If so, check out this page and take it from there…

In related news, Twilio also announced that they will be hosting their second annual TwilioCon on October 16, 17

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S III hits the FCC

We did know T-Mobile will be one of the U.S. carriers to offer the shiny new Samsung Galaxy S III. Their specific version of the device, marked as T999, has not only crossed the FCC hurdle, but has also be spotted at Bluetooth SIG (while its Wi-Fi certificate has been issued before). What this means is that Samsung is finalizing paperwork for the Big Day, which will (as promised) take place at some point this summer. We’ve no idea whether the Magenta carrier will change the name of the phone — and as far as I’m concerned that’s not the big deal — the most important thing is that T-Mobile is on board… And now we need to see which other carriers will join the wave. My guess is – all of the major ones will sell their own versions of

Peel for Android updated with the ability to follow your TV-watching friends

Peel released what it calls the “enhanced version” of its Android app, bringing personalized discovery and social TV experience to Google’s mobile platform. Users can find and follow friends, see what their friends are watching, view Favorite Programs and Guilty Pleasures, get TV recommendations and comment on posts – all while on the go.

Peel likes to think their app eliminates the need for classic TV listings, while at the same time bringing users closer to the shows they love. Moreover, the application makes it easy to discover your next favorite show and connect with a like-minded TV community.

Once you select a favorite show or channel, you will be able to see what is on TV from your customized menu. Touch one of the thumbnails and Peel will display a brief description of the episode or movie that is playing…

Again, Peel is a free app and definitely a
