Mobile startup Fun Machine believes games can do social good
Fun Machine, a new mobile entertainment software company based in Austin, Texas, was founded in early 2011. So why did it wait until today to let the world know it was officially open for business?
“We decided that launching our first game was more important than telling the world that we existed,” CEO Patrick Curry (pictured) told GamesBeat via email. “Anyone can say they’re switching gears and leaving consoles behind to make mobile games. It’s something else altogether to actually go do it. So we launched Awesome Eats and were totally blown away with the response!”
A free app for iOS devices, Awesome Eats has gained over 800,000 players and has been featured by Apple in over 100 countries. The company made the game for the Whole Kids Foundation, a non-profit

A Windows racket: Microsoft will clean crapware off your PC for $99
The PC crapware problem has finally gotten bad enough that Microsoft is now charging users to fix it.
For $99 Microsoft is now offering to strip consumers’ Windows PCs of all unnecessary software pre-installed by PC makers, AllThingsD reports. Affectionally dubbed “crapware”, the software is installed by PC makers in exchange for cash from vendors and is almost universally hated by owners of new Windows PCs.
This makes the removal program an arrangement bordering on a racket: PC makers get paid to put the software on computers, and Microsoft gets paid to remove it. Perhaps this questionable situation is part of the reason Microsoft never made it a priority to advertise the offer, even though its been around since 2010.
To be fair, as Microsoft PR pointed out to VentureBeat over the phone, the $99 fee is more than just crapware removal. Also included in the offer are things like Windows 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials installation, data

Crossing the Wires: Does Hardware or Software Matter for Smartphones?
Crossing the Wires debates opposing sides of a complex issue to give you the compete picture.
Why Hardware Will Always Matter
As Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platform continue to battle for market share, it’s easy to think smartphones have become all about the software, but what’s under the hood, and the hood itself, still matters and it always will.
The argument here isn’t that software doesn’t matter. It does. In fact, software is probably the number one thing people consider before making their choice about which smartphone they’re going to buy. Android or iOS? Maybe the user wants to try something different and go with a Windows Phone device. However, after that choice is made, it all comes down to hardware.
Hardware Drives Consumer Choices
Let’s say the customer decides to go with Android. Great. The next question customers must ask themselves is what they will use the device for. Are they

Microsoft offering $15 upgrade to Windows 8 Pro
Microsoft will be offering a very low-cost upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for customers who purchase a Windows 7 PC after June 2. According to insider sources of the WinSuperSite, the upgrade will only cost $15 and will help motivate customers who may otherwise hold off on a new purchase until the next-gen platform is released.
It’s not uncommon for Microsoft to offer such promotions in the months ahead of a new platform launch, but this time around it’s offering customers a direct upgrade to the Pro version of Windows 8 regardless of what version Windows 7 they are currently using. The offer will kick off around the same time that Microsoft plans to distribute the Release Preview of Windows 8 and is only applicable to purchases made after June 2. Additional upgrades will also be made available for Windows 8 and Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/svOcqIxCuRE/

iCloud is getting some photo sharing upgrades at WWDC
The WWDC 2012 rumors are cranking out fast now that it’s less than a month away. The latest to hit the Internet revolves around what Apple will do with iCloud. For iCloud’s first birthday, it will likely get a wealth of desirable upgrades.
Apple is apparently in the process of taking Photo Stream, a current iCloud service that lets individual users share their own most recent photos with the cloud to keep in sync on all device, and turn it into a social network of sorts. This would mean users could share not just one set, but multiple sets of photos with other iCloud users and friends can interact with and comment on them.
In addition to photos, Apple wants to switch into high gear by allowing for videos to live in the cloud. The photos you take on your iPhone are easily sent up into iCloud and back down
