Zuck’s dawdle in the NY Sheraton bathroom, a sign of things to come
That little anecdote about Facebook’s roadshow meeting in New York was widely reported this past week, but it’s being picked up as symbolic of Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg’s indifference to Wall Street.
For those of you who missed the report, Zuckerbeg was still in the men’s room as the audience of Wall Street heavy-hitters waited for him outside in the ballroom of the Sheraton hotel on Monday. His deputy, Sheryl Sandberg was apparently forced to get started with questions and answers while they waited for him. When he did come out, he wore a gray hoodie, which was considered a snub by some of the buttoned up suits of Wall Street. Here was Zuckerberg, supposedly trying to sell the street on the merits of Facebook’s IPO, and he just wasn’t taking them seriously.
The anecdote anchors the NYT story this morning about Zuckerberg.
Arguably, it’s exactly Zuckerberg’s defiance,

ITTO: The Rise of the Brogrammer — Part Bro, Part Sexist Programmer
Is This Thing On?, or ITTO, is our Wednesday column showing how everyday people use technology in unexpected ways.
The rapid growth of iPods, smartphones, tablets and apps brings heaps of cash and is elevating the previously low-level coders who create them into a new status: the brogrammer — a combo of nerdy programmer and college fratboy.
Incorporating the college term “bro” is a nod to the newfound swagger techies are enjoying as their products increasingly become what is hip and cool on campus, and a result, Main Street. Facebook’s highly publicized IPO underscores what the newfound élan means beyond that, to Wall Street, in terms of respectability and sky-rocketing fortunes.
Tech companies are taking notice of this trend — something from their perspective that may be long overdue, and are using these terms to recruit young students to tech-start-ups. For example, one poster for job hunters asked students if they want

Is Zuckerberg Still the Right CEO for Facebook?
The social network’s co-founder will control a 57 percent majority of his company’s stock after it goes public later this month. Zuckerberg’s stake is worth $25 billion, but despite all he’s done to build the Facebook empire, analysts worry he may not have what it takes to be the CEO of a publicly traded super-power.
In a world where people’s moods and feelings can often be discovered just by looking at their Facebook status, Zuckerberg is far less predictable. He, much like his company, has always been a bit of a rebel. His actions in the business world are consistently inconsistent, something that’s far easier to get away with when you work for yourself than when you are answering to a room full of angry investors.
For example, Zuckerberg proclaimed publicly that Facebook was not interested in purchasing any other companies. Shortly after, he ponied up $1 billion for the photo Čítaj ďalej: http://www.mobiledia.com/news/142313.html

Why geeks (and other lean machines) need high-intensity workouts
I just wrote a book called Fitness for Geeks, so as you can imagine, I get a lot of health and exercise questions from people who want highly technical answers. For example, I was recently asked, “What’s the best form of exercise for losing weight?”
The question itself is a little misleading because, despite the popular wisdom, you can’t really lose weight via the “burning off of calories by exercising as much as you possibly can.” This is because the vast majority of people simply put the calories back on after long workouts. It’s not their fault or a sign of a lack of willpower — the body is simply a smart system that is very efficient at retaining and replacing stored calories.
Let’s do the math. You’re a hardcore runner who jogs 30 miles a week, five six-mile runs on average. You finish a six-mile run in a little

Daily Roundup: "Avengers" Fans Have a New Enemy — Digital Film
Music lovers in New York and L.A. discovered their big-city credentials don’t necessarily translate into taste-making after research knighted Atlanta and Montreal the most important musical cities. Rapper Boobe assailed the world with “Don’t Text Me,” and even though he’s from D.C. (not high on the list of influential cities), his tech-savvy lyrics may pave the way for songs about the trials and travails of Google Docs.
Meanwhile, an intrepid college freshman showed the Internet how to make a DIY smart home, and probably made his parents proud.
“Avengers” Defeated By Hapless Projectionist
Film critics and fanboys waiting to see the “Avengers” movie had to wait a little longer after the screening copy of the film was accidentally deleted by a projectionist. The film was screen two hours later than scheduled, due to the time spent downloading the new screening file.
The snafu prompted a debate over the merits of digital film
