Google planning Moto-powered Android iPhone attack tip insiders

Google is planning to directly challenge Apple with an in-house smartphone and tablet business built on Motorola Mobility’s manufacturing heft, insiders claim, evolving the Nexus program into a true, own-branded range of Android hardware. Although it originally saw Motorola as a patent source, so two sources tell Business Insider, Google “has come to realize that it wants to follow Apple’s lead when it comes to smartphone and tablet computer development.” However, it faces growing resentment from Android OEMs.

According to one executive who supposedly met with an Android manufacturers, either Samsung or HTC – and to whom the scale of Google’s intent with Motorola Mobility is apparently dawning, to their collective fury – the meeting ended with “anger and dismay” over the search giant’s schemes. Their hope, apparently, is to band together and force Google to back down.

That has supposedly

Motorola Mobility accidentally leaks the Droid RAZR HD, codename Vanquish

Motorola’s announcement the Droid RAZR in October 2011 was awkward at best. Less than 24 hours later, on a stage half way around the world, Samsung showed off the Galaxy Nexus. Not only did the Nexus have better hardware specifications, but it also ran the latest and greatest version of Android. Then, just a few months later, the RAZR Maxx was unveiled. It fixed one of the RAZR’s biggest problems, battery life. As much as we loved the 3,300 mAh battery inside the Maxx, the RAZR still had a huge problem, the display. In today’s world of 720p flagship devices, the quarter HD resolution of the RAZR is just … not enough. That and it’s PenTile too, so text appears fuzzy, colors are off, and it’s just not a pleasant experience overall. Thanks to a Motorola Mobility employee who loves to share his photos on the internet, we

What Google’s Doing With Its $3 Billion Cash Pile

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company reported earnings of nearly $3 billion, on just over $8 billion in revenues. The numbers fell just short of analysts’ expectations, but Google is still on pace for growth over last year as it embarks on new projects.

The software giant now has nearly $50 billion in cash on hand to fund new business ventures, acquire smaller companies or fight impending lawsuits. The extra money is a nice cushion for Google as it attempts to grow in 2012.

The numbers suggest Google will continue to generate money through advertising, which has been the company’s main source of revenue for years. However, new smartphone ventures into hardware with newly acquired Motorola and low-end tablets have the potential to make or break the company’s profits throughout the rest of the year.

CEO Larry Page said his company will focus on improving its tablet offerings in the low-end of the

EU to investigate Motorola for unfairly leveraging patents against Apple, Microsoft

The European Union’s antitrust Commission has opened up two new investigations that will explore whether Motorola Mobility is unfairly licensing some of its patents, the organization announced today.

The investigations follows complaints from two of the biggest technology companies in the world. Back in February, Apple filed an official complaint against Motorola Mobility for violating agreements to fairly license standards-essential patents. Specifically, Apple focused on the 17,000 patents Google will get its hands on when its purchase of Motorola Mobility is complete. Weeks later, Microsoft  filed an official complaint with the EU against Motorola, focusing on its patents related to web videos.

All the Motorola Mobility patents in question are to be licensed on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. The FRAND classification means the owner of that particular patent must license it to other companies for a fee because the technology is considered essential to an industry.
