The Score: Verizon Delivers the Killshot to Unlimited Data

The Score is a weekly column scoring controversial events in the mobile industry. Want to get to the point? We’ll break it down and give you the score.

The Setup: When Verizon decided to go with tiered data plans last year, customers yelled and cried and kicked and screamed. Well, not literally, but they weren’t happy! However, Big Red eased the pain by telling customers that those who already had unlimited plans would be “grandfathered in” to this new model and be able to stick with the terms of their current agreement.

But not anymore! As Verizon’s 4G LTE network continues to grow and attract customers, the unlimited data plan will be a thing of the past. The reasoning is simple: customers using LTE data are eating up more spectrum than those who are using 3G. As a result, Verizon can’t afford to have thousands of customers with unlimited data eating

Strategy Analytics: LTE connections to hit 90 million this year, 1 billion by 2017

Someone needs to invent an equivalent to Moore’s law for the rise of mobile technology connections. So far I haven’t noticed a pattern, but I’m sure these things don’t grow just like that… or they do?

Anyhow, it took 12 years for GSM wireless technology to reach one billion connections, and WCDMA took 11 years. LTE, on the other hand, will cross the same road in just 7 years, according to the latest report from Strategy Analytics.

The report also notes that this year will end with more than 90 million LTE connections, with the figure further rising to reach the 1 billion mark by 2017, making for the fastest implementation of new wireless technology to date.

The research company’s Sue Ruddsaid said that mobile operators are now trying to reduce cost per GB to match the rate at which revenue per GB is falling. “LTE is one of the key

T-Mobile to offer new contract-free mobile data plans May 20th

Wireless carrier T-Mobile will soon offer new contract-free mobile broadband plans designed for the growing number of Americans who prefer prepaid options to long-term contracts, the company said today.

T-Mobile is in a precarious position as the No. 4 wireless carrier behind Verizon, ATT, and Sprint. The other three networks offer true next-gen 4G data networks in some form, while T-Mobile only offers HSPA+ (think 3.5G). While HSPA+ data can be quite good at times, the company’s lack of LTE data has hurt its perception as a tech leader. But by offering affordable plans and cutting jobs, the company can likely survive until it offers up LTE data in 2013.

The new contract-free data plans, which become available May 20th, are listed below:

• 300MB 1-week pass for $15
• 1.5GB 1-month pass for $25
• 3.5GB 1-month pass for $35
• 5GB 1-month pass for $50

Unofficial Samsung Galaxy S III Battery Tests Reveal Promising Results

Home » Articles » Unofficial Samsung Galaxy S III Battery Tests Reveal Promising Results

One of the pressing concerns of many smartphone buyers is not only will it be upgraded to the latest software in the future, but how does its battery fare under real world conditions?  The Samsung Galaxy S III is definitely a great phone on paper, but can it be separated from its charger for more than a couple of hours when using LTE and running multiple tasks?

The guys over at GSMArena were recently able to run some tests on the device in order to gauge how well its battery could perform.  The results are promising, but it is important to remember the smartphone being tested is not LTE and runs on an Exynos quad-core processor, instead of the United State’s GSIII

NVIDIA Tegra 3 with 4G LTE Icera modem not shipping until 2013

Last year NVIDIA purchased a company called that specialized in cellular modems called Icera. Why? So they could sell their smartphone chips with built-in connectivity. That combination of CPU, GPU, and 3G/4G is what made Qualcomm as successful as they are today. But back to NVIDIA, they’ve been telling everyone that they’ll have a Tegra 3 out on the market with one of Icera’s modems sitting alongside it, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. During the company’s fiscal Q1 2013 financial results, NVIDIA said:

“Looking forward, you’ll see Tegra 3 LTE phones with partners’ baseband processors in the second half of this year and then next year with our own LTE baseband processors as well.”

Why is this important? Look at the HTC One X. In Europe and Asia it ships with the NVIDIA Tegra 3, but in America, one of the world’s largest markets
