How to design web sites for tablets
Imagine a website that looks horrible on a tablet. Or worse, doesn’t even actually function.
Oh wait, you don’t have to … because today, two whole years after the iPad picked up the dead tablet industry and whipped it into roaring, raging life, many websites are not optimized for tablets. Even new ones. Shocking? Sure. Unthinkable? Maybe. Unfortunately, however, it’s reality. And it’s not just the obscure little sites, either — try using Google Docs on your iPad for anything other than viewing.
Google Docs doesn’t like mobile Safari …
What’s the problem?
Sometimes it’s the simple stuff: a site with links and clickable images that are just a little bit too small. Usability guru Jakob Nielsen has skewered this fat-fingered problem, particularly on midsize tables like the Kindle Fire. Not so surprisingly , a design built for a 15″ laptop

iMore: Apple working on 7-inch iPad with $200-250 price tag, October launch
There’s a new iPad mini rumor going around the internet today, and this one doesn’t come out of Digitimes. Today’s rumor is brought to us by iMore, which actually has a solid track record for spot-on rumors.
iMore reports that Apple is in fact working on a 7″ iPad which will feature the same 2,048 by 1,536 Retina display found in the 10 inch variant. The iPad mini (name obviously TBD) should start hitting store shelves in October, for the surprisingly low price of $200-250, according to the report, though we expect the price will actually be closer to $299 due to Apple’s staunch position on high-quality parts.
There is obviously a huge market potential out there in the 7″ screen size market; many folks feel a 10″ slate is simply too big for most things people actually use a tablet for. Over 50% of the 2,600 people

How to Restrict Your Kindle to Protect Your Kids
The growing affordability of tablets makes them an educational and entertainment staple in many households, but parents busy themselves figuring out how to keep children’s curious eyes diverted from inappropriate material or from making unauthorized purchases. This challenge is increasing, especially as the devices become more child-friendly and the operations they perform become more sophisticated.
Cheaper Tablets: A Great Opportunity to Reach Kids
Children are quickly becoming a market for both tablets themselves and the specially created books, apps, games and entertainment children enjoy on them. Tablet makers understand a child-friendly appeal could boost customer loyalty among parents and widen the audience for software, services, and entertainment partnerships. According a Nielsen report earlier this year, nearly 70 percent of children with tablets in the home use the devices for gaming and learning.
Apple’s iPad paved the way, but this past holiday season Amazon boasted its closely integrated Kindle Fire tablet, with

Total tablet sales down in first quarter, but iPad market share back up to 68 percent
Overall tablet sales were down 1.2 million units in the first three months of 2012, but strong iPad sales boosted Apple’s market share to 68 percent, according to market researcher International Data Corporation (IDC).
IDC had estimated sales of close to 18.6 million units, down from the previous Christmas season quarter’s 28.2 million units. A slower post-Christmas quarter is generally expected, but actual sales were 17.4 million units, 1.2 million tablets fewer than predicted.
The bright spot in early 2012? Apple shipments remained strong – almost 12 million iPads sold. Apple sold so many in part due to the same dual price strategy that has served them so well in the mobile phone market: the current model at a premium price, and last year’s model at an industry-competitive price.
The real surprise is in the Android numbers, which are down significantly. While in the holiday season Android-based tablets accounted for almost
