Nokia Lumia 900 doubles as a hammer

Nokia quality engineers Mike Myers and Chris Ruble took a page from the book of Sonim and created a torture test video with the Lumia 900. After the necessary disclaimer to not try this at home, the pair start by hammering a nail into the Lumia display. If that wasn’t enough make you cringe, then you should check out the next segment in which they use the phone as a hammer. It’s impressive.

The video shows the strength of the materials that make up the phone. If you wondering what these materials are, Nokia says the body is a unibody polycarbonate shell and the glass display is Corning Gorilla Glass.

Google updates the session schedule for Google I/O

If you’re going to Google I/O, you may want to take a look at the conference’s event calendar and start planning your week. As reported by Android Police, Google is fleshing out the schedule for its June developer’s conference. You can attend sessions on game development, using the YouTube API and more.

If you’re not able to make it to the three-day conference, then you can watch the sessions from the comfort of your computer. Google is going to live stream many of the events and will make the rest of them available after 48 hours. It’s not the same as actually being there, but watching it from home is better than nothing.

Motorola updates its ICS rollout schedule, Razrs getting update in Q2

Motorola updated the rollout schedule for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The upgrade table lists the most recent rollout date and upgrade status for each handset. As expected, the Droid Razr and Razr Maxx will be among the first to get ICS, while Bionic owners will be near the end. It’s meant to be encouraging to Motorola owners, but many may be disappointed by the long wait.

Google released the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich back in November of 2011. That was six months ago. According to Motorola’s latest update, many upgrades are still in the development phase and not slated to arrive until Q3 2012.  It’s still shameful that it takes this long to get an update out the door. The reasons for this delay are complicated. Motorola and others blame Google for the delay, while some blame carriers for the delay.

In reality, it’s probably a combination of

Samsung uses a PenTile display because of its longevity

Samsung gets rave reviews about its mobile phone hardware, with one exception — the display. Though the Korean company uses color-rich AMOLED screens, it uses a less desirable PenTile screen instead of the preferred RGB display. People that don’t like the PenTile display claim the screen is not as crisp as an RGB display and report a color fringing that effects how images look on the smartphone’s screen. You can check out this 2010 Ars technica article about the Nexus One and its PenTile display for an in-depth explanation.

Philip Berne talked to MobileBurn about display technology and explained that Samsung chose PenTile for its phone because of longevity and reliability.  Due to its subpixel arrangement, a PenTile display should last longer than its RGB counterpart, which is important to mobile phone customers who often buy a phone with a two-year contract.

Though many people complain about PenTile, Berne

Apple drops 4G from the iPad name, rebrands tablet as ‘WiFi + Cellular’

In an uncharacteristic move, Apple has given in to both consumer and regulatory pressure and renamed the 4G version of the iPad. On Apple’s website and in stores, the iPad with a cellular radio is now called the iPad WiFi + Cellular. Apple’s original name for the tablet device, WiFi + 4G, was allegedly confusing to some customers who lived in areas that did not have 4G connectivity.

Customers and consumer advocacy groups in Australia, the UK and other regions complained that Apple’s 4G branding was misleading to customers who thought they were buying a device with fast internet connectivity. Many were upset when they realized they could only get 3G speeds. Apple tried to ease these complaints by putting up disclaimers explaining that 4G speeds were only available in the US and Canada. The company also argued its 4G branding met the standards set by the ITU. Apparently,
