In Brief: Apple and HTC Duke It Out
HTC’s recent phone models, the HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE, have both been delayed indefinitely in the U.S. due to a patent investigation by U.S. Customs on Apple’s behalf, which could devastate the Taiwanese phone maker’s U.S. prospects.
The patent in question concerns how phone data about a user’s contacts appears on-screen.
What’s Happening: The U.S. District Court of Delaware ordered the decision makers from Apple and HTC in the most recent patent battle to meet to reach a settlement over the issue. Magistrate Judge Sherry R. Fallon will oversee the discussions, which will likely include Apple CEO Tim Cook and top executives at HTC.
HTC issued a statement about the hold on its phones and upcoming patent skirmish, pointing out the controversial feature in question “is a small UI experience and HTC will completely remove it from all of our phones soon.”
To get around the ban, HTC is

Reuters: Nokia is burning money too fast and they might even default
Nokia had more than 10 billion Euros in their piggy bank in 2007, the year that the iPhone came out. Today that figure stands at less than half that. What’s most troubling is that Nokia lost 2.1 billion Euros during the past five quarters alone. If this rate of erosion continues, then things could get ugly. According to analysts who have spoken to Reuters, Nokia is at risk of running out of money in just two years. On average, the analysts that were polled say that Nokia will burn through an additional 2 billion Euros over the next three quarters. Only the most cynical believe that Nokia will default on their debt, but then again even the most negative commentators have been wrong in predicting just how bad things would get for the Finnish handset maker.
So say everything goes to hell in a handbasket, what next? Right

HTC EVO 4G LTE delayed at Best Buy
Best Buy may have jumped the gun a little in throwing up a release date for the HTC EVO 4G LTE. The company has now sent out emails to customers saying that the phone has been delayed, with no new date given so far. It comes after it was revealed that the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE face a customs block, preventing the phones from being sold in the United States until they’ve been cleared of patent infringement. The phone was due to go on sale today, but the devices have been held at customs thanks to a December ITC ruling blocking the import of future HTC Android handsets. HTC was found to be infringing on one of Apple’s patents relating to the use of email address and phone number links. Clicking one of those would bring up a context Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/yM-lTahEZxg/

Apple and HTC ordered to discuss patent settlement in August
The fight between Apple and HTC is heating up: earlier this week the US International Trade Commission impounded HTC’s shipments of high-end phones, presumably due to the December patent decision in Apple’s favor. It looks like the Delaware District Court has had enough (not unlike some other people) and has ordered the two companies to enter settlement talks starting on August 28th. A similar order was issued in Apple’s litigation against Samsung earlier this year. The patent suit started last year, but HTC had said publicly that they’d engineered around Apple’s patent by disabling the phone number and email linking feature on their phones. Apparently this wasn’t enough for the ITC, as they’ve stopped shipments of ATT’s version of the HTC One X and the as-yet unreleased HTC EVO 4G LTE at customs to check their compliance. After confirming the delay, HTC said that Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/ikhbcFCQzNQ/
