T-Mobile: Shared data plans are not good for consumers

Amidst all the chatter from Verizon Wireless about being the first major carrier in the United States to offer shared data plans for families this summer, T-Mobile is taking a radically different approach. In a blog post, senior vice president of marketing at T-Mobile Andrew Sherrard made his views perfectly clear: shared data plans are not the way to go.

Some of our competitors are backing away from simple, unlimited data and moving to family shared data plans. But would this approach actually deliver a better value to consumers?  Do families really want to keep track of each others’ data consumption? We don’t think so,” he writes. “Just imagine mom’s email is suddenly unavailable because her teenage son watched an HD movie on his phone, consuming the family’s data allotment.” He then goes on to talk about how optimal data plans should contain three qualities: affordability, worry-free, and

Color partners with Verizon for live streaming

How many times has social media app Color reinvented itself? We’ve lost count, but it seems to have found its newest suitor in the form of Verizon. Color and Verizon will be teaming up to install a version of the app on select Android LTE smartphones that would enable live-streaming of HD video while maintaining a local recorded copy. Verizon customers will also have access to an exclusive feature that will allow them to add sound to their recordings.

Color can stream video and then inform friends via Facebook when a user starts to broadcast, with the intention that events such as concerts can be shared live. The company also hopes to up the quality sent out over LTE by customizing the app to each specific smartphone on Verizon’s network. On top of that, Color will add a feature in the future

Intel integrated HD Graphics 4000 doubles gaming power

Slipped into the announcement of its third-generation Core architecture was the mention of the HD 4000 series of integrated graphics cards, which will replace the standard graphics currently on a huge assortment of laptops and desktops. According to Intel, the new integrated graphics chips will deliver up to double performance from the 3000 series, an impressive claim and a necessary advancement as Ultrabooks (most of which use Intel’s HD graphics) become a more popular PC segment.

The HD Graphics 4000 integrated chips will support Microsoft’s DirectX11 standard, OpenGL 3.1 and OpenCL 1.1. Intel was quick to extol the 4000 series’ virtues, but you don’t have to take their word for it: Valve’s co-founder and director Gabe Newell attested to its performance. Said Newell, “Mainstream gamers are going to
