Why Sprint Needs to Drop Unlimited Data to Survive
The Overland Park, Kan.-based carrier posted a smaller-than-expected January-March loss, boosted by selling over 1.5 million iPhones and rising revenue from those smartphone data services. In fact, much of the success comes from a $100-a-month unlimited plan that rivals Verizon and ATT aren’t offering.
But ultimately, Sprint is playing a flawed strategy by giving away data. The wireless market is saturating, and carriers are seeing the bulk of their earnings transition to data services from calling and texting plans.
CEO Dan Hesse plans to spend heavily to build out a faster 4G network, similar to what ATT and Verizon are doing. But unlike those rivals, Sprint will reap lower earnings per customer due to the flat-rate of unlimited data. In contrast, ATT and Verizon moved to tiered plans over a year ago, and stand to see the most gains from higher data use.
In the push to keep up with ATT

Why Samsung’s Galaxy S3 Can’t Beat the IPhone… Yet
“Come and meet the next Galaxy,” the invitation to journalists read, all but ensuring the S3′s launch event. The South Korean electronics giant has yet to announce details, but circulated specifications hint at more powerful hardware.
For instance, the Galaxy S3 is widely-reported to offer a ceramic shell, rather than plastic, giving it a higher-quality feel — essential to matching the iPhone’s glass casing.
In addition, the Galaxy S3 comes with a higher-quality “Super-HD” AMOLED display, with a 1,280 by 720 pixel resolution at 319 pixels per inch — a significant boost over the S2′s 800 by 480 resolution and 217 pixel density, and noticeably better than the iPhone’s 960 by 640 pixel resolution.
Powered by a quad-core A9-based chipset, the S3 also runs at a blazing 1.8-gigahertz, more than twice the speed of the iPhone’s 800-megabytes, while Android 4.0 software, dubbed “Ice Cream Sandwich,” ensures consumers get the latest Google

Google may sell its own tablets (perhaps made by Samsung, Asus) this summer
Last year, Google CEO Eric Schmidt (pictured) said that the company planned to market its own Android tablets within the next six months. Now the supply chain is rumbling with rumors about who the manufacturer will be.
The Wall Street Journal‘s anonymous sources point to both Asus and Samsung as potential manufacturers for the tablets, which would be co-branded with Google’s logo, and sold in an online store run by Google later this year.
While Google hasn’t named any exact timing yet, Schmidt did say in December 2011 that the project had a six-month waiting period ahead of it. However, Google I/O, the company’s annual blowout two-day conference is slated to take place in late June. Without consulting the office’s Magic 8-Ball, we can expect with some level of confidence to hear more news on the tablet then, as well as the newest Android operating system version, Jelly Bean.

Instagram for Android pre-registration opens
Instagram has opened a pre-registration page for Android users wanting to be first in line for the upcoming Instagram for Android app. The much-anticipated Android version of the app still hasn’t had its release exactly dated, but the Instagram team has said that it is coming “very soon” and may, in fact, be considered even better than the widely popular iOS version.
That iOS version has over 27m registered users, Instagram said earlier this month, taking advantage of the app’s various retro-style photo filters and straightforward sharing. Exactly how the Android app will differ wasn’t detailed, though company co-founder Mike Kreiger revealed that the Google Android team was supposedly impressed by how Instagram “leverages” the OS. Instagram first confirmed the work-in-progress Android port back in December 2011, saying at the time that it had two engineers on Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/nJfamFBcdS8/

Nokia to Battle Android with Cheaper Lumia Line

At the Mobile World Congress in February, the Finnish phone maker announced the $250 Lumia Windows 610, the least expensive Lumia offering so far. The 610 expands Nokia’s already diverse array of lower-end feature phones with modern upgrades, imitating Android by offering a broad scope of products to draw customers across multiple sectors, a crucial move if Nokia wants to compete with other industry giants.
The company is eager to become even more competitive against Android with a drop in prices. According to Nokia vice-president Niklas Savander, “Android is in many markets at the $130 price already, so that would suggest that if we are at $250 with the Lumia 610 we still have work to do when it comes to creating
