T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S III hits the FCC
We did know T-Mobile will be one of the U.S. carriers to offer the shiny new Samsung Galaxy S III. Their specific version of the device, marked as T999, has not only crossed the FCC hurdle, but has also be spotted at Bluetooth SIG (while its Wi-Fi certificate has been issued before). What this means is that Samsung is finalizing paperwork for the Big Day, which will (as promised) take place at some point this summer. We’ve no idea whether the Magenta carrier will change the name of the phone — and as far as I’m concerned that’s not the big deal — the most important thing is that T-Mobile is on board… And now we need to see which other carriers will join the wave. My guess is – all of the major ones will sell their own versions of

LightSquared seeks bankruptcy protection
LightSquared has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy status, according to a report from Bloomberg.
The company once heralded for attempting to bring high-speed wireless access to as many as 260 million Americans met tough criticism from the FCC, which found that LightSquared’s technology had the potential to essentially unleash fury on GPS networks akin to that unleashed by a woman scorned.
LightSquared’s filings indicate it has assets of $4.48 billion and debts of $2.29 billion as of February 29th. LightSquared’s creditors were seeking a deal that would oust CEO Philip Falcone, who will remain alongside the current management team as LightSquared works through the regulatory process in hopes of jumpstarting its efforts to create a nationwide 4G network.
Falcone issued the statement in light of today’s filing:
”Today’s filing was not an option the company embraced quickly or easily, but it was necessary to protect LightSquared

Google and AT&T trade barbs over Android updates
ATT CEO Randall Stephenson has been on a roll as of late. First, he flat out admitted that customers should expect to see their wireless services prices go up thanks to the company’s botched acquisition of T-Mobile. Second, the ATT boss expressed his regret of not getting rid of unlimited data plans a lot sooner. Boy, you got to love that good old Death Star.
Just when you thought these disturbing confessions weren’t grim enough, Stephenson, has now blamed Google for delayed updates to its Android smartphones. Yes, you heard right. Stephenson talking to the Milken Institute said, “Google determines what platform gets the newest releases and when. Many times, that’s a negotiated arrangement and that’s something we work at hard. We know that’s important to our customers. That’s kind of an ambiguous answer because I can’t give you a direct answer in this setting.”
Thankfully, the folks over at 9to5Google got to

Nokia 808 PureView flaunts oversized sensor at FCC
Nokia’s 808 PureView has sashayed through the FCC, flaunting its sizable camera sensor and revealing functionality details thanks to the prematurely-published user manual. The size, of course, comes as little surprise, given Nokia’s imaging team has managed to pump 41-megapixels into the Symbian smartphone.
Those 41-megapixels are used as an innovative workaround to the bulk and complexity of a traditional optical zoom. Rather than accommodate moving lenses in a phone, Nokia’s team theorized, instead use a subsection of a huge-resolution image. Thus the target image size is actually more like 5- or 8-megapixels, with lossless zooming and post-shot cropping possible with the 808 PureView. Nokia even makes accessing it super-speedy, with the camera shortcut button loading the app in less than a second, even if the phone is locked. There’s also an optional HDMI connector kit for hooking up a big-screen TV Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/6-9_r2RDhVU/

OMG R U OK? America is getting its first-ever 911 texting service
Verizon is working on the U.S.’s first-ever emergency texting service.
Text-to-911 will be incredibly useful for a wide range of mobile customers, from the young-and-hip to the hard-of-hearing. It’s also more useful than voice communication in uniquely mobile scenarios, such as low battery or poor signal strength.
Verizon has just selected a vendor for the project; rollout should begin as soon as early 2013. The FCC is applauding the move, which will bring SMS emergency response services to any text-messaging-capable phone.
FCC spokesperson Tammy Sun told TheHill that the organization “commended the company for offering consumers another way to reach 911 that is consistent with how millions of consumers already use mobile devices in their daily lives.”
The FCC itself has been trying to bring 911 emergency services into the land of SMS since at least 2010. In a speech in November of that year, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski told the public,
