RIM Goes Back to Basics with Business Devices
The BlackBerry maker, which never successfully transitioned to touch screen, app-centric devices, isn’t past the point of no return, and new CEO Thorsten Heins said the company has no plans to put the company up for sale.
For a company that was a top competitor in the mobile market, RIM’s story proves just how a failure to integrate changing technology and continue to innovate can greatly affect profit and industry relevance.
Heins, who took over as CEO from co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis in late January, says the company will revert to its core focus on enterprise to keep BlackBerry alive, due in part to its well-known security systems popular in business markets.
“We plan to refocus on the enterprise business and capitalize on our leading position in this segment,” Heins said. “We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried

How to attract users to your app and go platinum
If you are a struggling artist or developer working on the next great mobile app, your need a strategy for drawing in users.
Keep in mind that buying traffic to convert to users doesn’t always add up. Developing for the mobile platform is vastly different from e-commerce, where the potential average revenue per user (ARPU) is considerably smaller, and in many cases non-existent. At the same time, there’s a limited amount of advertising inventory, and discoverability remains poor.
If you’re considering buying downloads, today’s cost per download (CPD) rates range from $1 to $2, which means it would cost you $10 million to $20 million to buy 10 million to 20 million downloads, which is the current benchmark figure for a successful app.
One way of getting around this is to optimize heavily for organic growth without trying to reinvent the “social graph wheel.” There are already existing, sizable social graphs (like Facebook),

Micron appoints new CEO in wake of Appleton’s death
Micron Technology said yesterday it has appointed D. Mark Durcan to replace chief executive Steve Appleton, who died Friday when the small experimental plane he was piloting crashed at the Boise airport.
Durcan was previously Micron’s president and chief operating officer. While the loss of Appleton, the long time CEO, is devastating, the largest American manufacturer of memory chips has had the advantage of having stable management for a long time. Part of the reason is that its Boise, Idaho-based location is far removed from other chip companies that might poach employees. But Micron has also been an exceedingly well-run company in a volatile price-sensitive industry.
Durcan, 51, will be joined by Robert Switz, who will succeed Appleton as chairman of the board. And Mark W. Adams will serve as president. Switz has been a director
