The Score: Verizon Delivers the Killshot to Unlimited Data

The Score is a weekly column scoring controversial events in the mobile industry. Want to get to the point? We’ll break it down and give you the score.

The Setup: When Verizon decided to go with tiered data plans last year, customers yelled and cried and kicked and screamed. Well, not literally, but they weren’t happy! However, Big Red eased the pain by telling customers that those who already had unlimited plans would be “grandfathered in” to this new model and be able to stick with the terms of their current agreement.

But not anymore! As Verizon’s 4G LTE network continues to grow and attract customers, the unlimited data plan will be a thing of the past. The reasoning is simple: customers using LTE data are eating up more spectrum than those who are using 3G. As a result, Verizon can’t afford to have thousands of customers with unlimited data eating

CEO of T-Mobile USA slams Verizon’s 700 MHz spectrum sale

A few days ago we wrote how Verizon’s proposed sale of its 700 MHz A and B spectrum licenses weren’t valuable. The largest wireless provider in the United States has being trying to woo the FCC into an approval of its acquisition of AWS spectrum it had attained from a consortium of cable operators, which includes Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Well, T-Mobile boss Philipp Humm has expressed not only his disapproval of VZW’s proposed sale of spectrum, but its acquisition of AWS spectrum from cable companies.

Last week, Humm along with other company execs had a meeting with Rick Kaplan, the chief of the FCC’s wireless bureau. In that meeting, T-Mobile pointed out how Verizon hasn’t used any of its AWS spectrum in the last six years. They also added that if Big Red is given more spectrum “ … It would make no sense, and would

Verizon invites every hockey fan to check out their NHL GameCenter app

Verizon Wireless is using the NHL fever to get some media love and… they got our attention. The carrier’s free to download app, Verizon NHL GameCenter, comes with all the news, stats, audio and video content you could possibly wish for and then some.

The app features live streaming of nationally broadcast games on NBC, condensed game highlights and live game audio; along with every stat, penalty and goal during a game.

When it comes to compatible devices, this is an Android app which should work with all smartphones and tablets running Google’s mobile OS. Still, the Big Red carrier likes to think you’ll be getting your NHL fix on one of their devices like the DROID RAZR or Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7…

All in all, if you’re a fan of NHL, you’ll want to check out Verizon’s new app…

Verizon’s DROID RAZR/RAZR MAXX, HTC Rezound getting ICS updates next week?

It looks like Verizon Wireless and its handset making partners are super serious to release Ice Cream Sandwich updates for popular phones before anyone else. According to a leaked document from Best Buy (pictured above), two (or that’s three) of the hottest Android smartphones in the Big Red’s portfolio — DROID RAZR, DROID RAZR MAXX and HTC Rezound — will get their Android 4 updates next week. More precisely, the DROID RAZR/RAZR MAXX users may be prompted to update as early as Wednesday, while those with HTC’s smartphone could get the same prompt two days later (Friday).

Of course, this is far from an official announcement and I guess all we can do is wait and see what’s going to happen. One thing is certain though – both phones rock dual-processor and will eventually get their serving of Ice Cream Sandwich. If not next week than in the next

UK: Samsung Galaxy S II Android 4.0 update lives on Three; Vodafone users to get it soon, too

British operator-branded versions of the Samsung Galaxy S II have started getting their Ice Cream Sandwich servings with Three leading the way, allowing its SGS2 users to get the latest version of Android as we speak.

Meanwhile, Vodafone is still testing the new software and has rather released what it calls the “preparatory” update, which should reportedly make your Galaxy S II ready for Android 4. According to the Big Red carrier, the new software is still in the testing phase and will be released to the general public once every aspect of it has been thoroughly tested out. Guess that’s a good thing, though I must say I don’t get what there is to test. Perhaps some of the apps Voda is preloading with its own version of the device?

In any case, we’re eager to hear whether you got your ICS update. Please specify
