5 Reasons Facebook’s IPO Matters to You
1. It Will Affect Your Privacy
Facebook is an enormously popular website, but how will it translate that popularity into money for investors? The social media giant’s biggest asset is its wide collection of personal information, and though the company probably isn’t going to risk alienating its user base by doing anything too extreme, it is likely to try to find a way to dip into that resource to increase profits.
As Rep. Ed Markey (D., Mass.) explained, “To respond to the demands of profit-hungry shareholders, Facebook will be under increasing pressure to squeeze revenue from its most valuable asset — the vast treasure trove of personal information it’s collected on users.”
But don’t worry too much — any attempts to capitalize on personal information will meet intense scrutiny from lawmakers and consumer groups.
2. It Means More Ads
One of the perceived weaknesses of Facebook’s stock stems from the company’s inability to monetize its

Hey RIM: It’s the App Store, Stupid!
The Waterloo, Ont.-based company focuses on making the user experience on its updated platform as “fluid” as possible. This includes new gestures so customers can see all notifications without leaving the device’s home screen, a messaging app that includes IMs, emails and text messages in the same space and a new live tile system and app drawer.
When the iPhone and Android smartphones began to emerge, RIM missed the boat by failing to evolve its OS to keep up. Now, the company is missing it again as it spends all its time updating BlackBerry’s user interface while ignoring the health of its mobile app store. Features like live tiles on the home screen and an updated, intuitive keyboard are nice interface ideas, but they may not be enough to make customers go with BlackBerry over platforms with more established app stores.

Google+ for iOS gets bold update
Google has released a new version of Google+ for iOS, the iPhone app for its Facebook-rivaling social network, with an ambitious interface redesign that promises to “embrace” the mobile experience. Google+ for iOS v2.0.0.5888 delivers another step “toward a simpler, more beautiful Google” the search giant claims, with crisper fonts, a more user-friendly homescreen design, better transitions and photos and multimedia that look eye-poppingly good.
“We’re not interested in a mobile or social experience that’s just smaller” Google says of the update. ”We’re embracing the sensor-rich smartphone (with its touchable screen and high-density display), and transforming Google+ into something more intimate, and more expressive. Today’s new iPhone app is an important step in this direction—toward a simpler, more beautiful Google.” The somewhat stilted and plain UI of before has gone, replaced with crisp grays and blacks and plentiful use of overlays, gradients and other Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/TS3IxVe41as/

Facebook App Center wraps apps in social
Facebook has announced its own iOS and Android app store, the Facebook App Center, offering users of the social network browser-based and downloaded software that connects users through their social credentials. The new App Center will basically turn Facebook into a profile page wrapper for iPhone and Android software, offering links to the App Store and Play Market for those titles which requite downloads, as well as easy access to web-based apps coded in HTML5 and other languages.
All canvas, mobile and web apps will be eligible for inclusion in Facebook App Center, the company says, as long as they meet the guidelines. They include such qualifications as having high app ratings and a low negative feedback rate, not using a UI that misleads users into thinking it’s part of Facebook itself, but also providing seamless login with Facebook Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/pohDd4YtZtw/

iFlop: 60% of iOS developers lose money on apps (infographic)
Nearly 60 percent of iOS developers don’t break even with the apps that they create and market, according to a recent study by App Promo.
While we hear a lot about blockbuster hits like Draw Something or Angry Birds Space, it’s all too easy for apps to get lost in the crowd of more than 600,000 apps in the App Store. Application marketing firm App Promo’s “First Annual Developer Survey” indicates that 59 percent of developers don’t generate enough revenue to break even.
The survey said that only 12 percent of apps earned $50,000 or more and that this “top earner” subset spent an average of 14 percent of their time on marketing. On the side of app developers who weren’t able to break even, 52 percent of app developers set aside $0 and less than 5 percent of their time promoting their apps. That certainly
