Can Facebook stay cool now that it’s an enormous public corporation?
“A million dollars isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A billion dollars,” Sean Parker says in the famous line from “The Social Network.”
Trite though the line may be, Facebook, valued at $104 billion, is in the process of minting billionaires and millionaires — and that’s pretty darn cool. But as a public company, Facebook is on the cusp of becoming so utterly unavoidable that it risks diving off the cliff of coolness into the waters of overexposure.
In talking with experts, analysts, and Facebook users on the topic of Facebook’s cool factor, we found two pretty distinct camps. Facebook is either fly enough to become the next Apple and maintain its allure as it takes over world, or it’s already years past its cool prime.
Let’s consider the arguments, shall we?

With Yahoo lawsuit looming and IPO coming soon, Facebook buys $550M in patents from Microsoft (AOL)
Facebook is paying Microsoft $550 million for access to 650 patents, All Things Digital’s Ina Fried reports. Facebook is facing a patent lawsuit from Yahoo and is expected to IPO in May 17th.
It appears that a number of these patents come from the $1 billion in intellectual property that Microsoft purchased from AOL earlier this month. As the patent wars heat up, these things are changing hands like hotcakes. Microsoft has issued this press release:
REDMOND, Wash. and MENLO PARK, Calif. — April 23, 2012 — Microsoft Corp. and Facebook announced today a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will assign to Facebook the right to purchase a portion of the patent

Facebook and Microsoft reach $550m deal over AOL patents
Microsoft and Facebook have announced an agreement that would see Facebook making use of some of Microsoft’s patent portfolio recently acquired from AOL. Facebook has agreed to purchase the patents for $550 million. Microsoft purchased around 925 patents from AOL as part of the original deal, and will be selling around 650 patents to Facebook. While Microsoft has sold those 650 patents to Facebook, it will still be able to leverage them under a license agreement, and still holds ownership over around 275 of AOL’s patents and applications. Microsoft has also licensed around 300 additional patents from AOL that the latter company did not offer for sale originally. It looks to be a strategic move from Microsoft, who says it “achiev[ed] our goals from the AOL auction” while recouping half the costs. Brad Smith, executive vice president and general counsel for Microsoft, says, “As Čítaj ďalej: http://feeds.slashgear.com/~r/slashgear/~3/KcQWurZgobo/

Facebook, Twitter and others now tied into BBM
BlackBerry has announced a handful of applications that will become BBM connected over the next few weeks. Facebook, Twitter, BlackBerry Travel, BlackBerry App World, and BlackBerry Music will all see apps updated in the next 10 days that will allow users to interact with BBM friends within these applications. You’ll be able to do things like share your favorite apps, status updates, and tweets with your BBM contacts right from within those connected applications.
The BBM app itself is being upgraded to bring BBM Tag Integration support, quicker sending of voice notes, simpler profile updates, as well as new integrations for the previously named applications. Even better, RIM is adding animated avatars to BBM so you can re-live the days of Yahoo and AOL instant messenger.
The closer BBM integration makes it even easier to share your social world, music, and travel plans with your BBM contacts,
