Malware: The Threat to Google’s Android Empire
The new Trojan virus, called “NotCompatible,” downloads automatically to users’ phones and tablets without their knowledge upon visiting certain websites, according to security firm Lookout. Once a person’s device gets infected, all personal information on the handset is at risk to the hackers behind the virus.
Analysts say the threat on Android devices is not widespread at this point, but the fact that a virus can be downloaded through a mobile browser at all is damaging to the platform and could widen the threat of malware to a bigger pool of users. Malware issues within the Android Market have plagued Google’s OS for some time, but users could steer clear of threats by making sure their downloaded apps were legitimate.
This new Android virus can hide in Web pages that users visit all the time, leaving all users susceptible to malware without any warning. NotCompatible has only popped up on websites with

15 months after launch, Apple’s Mac App Store hits 10K app milestone
More than 15 months after Apple launched its Mac App Store, the software hub has 10,000 paid and free apps.
The Mac App Store brought the concept of Apple’s iOS App Store to the company’s OS X operating system, but it has attracted far fewer developers than its mobile-focused store. When Mac App Store launched in Jan. 2011, it contained about 1,600 apps and has grown slowly to 10,000. At least the store has attracted nice download numbers: Apple said in December that the store had seen more than 100 million downloads since launch. No doubt that number is significantly higher now.
Comparatively, Apple’s iOS App Store now has more than 600,000 apps and has become the gold standard for mobile software distribution. In second place, Google’s Play store (formerly Android Market) now has more than 400,000 apps for the Android OS.
On a personal note, I’ve only

Yahoo dives deeper down the Node.js rabbit hole with open-source Mojito
Today, Yahoo is open-sourcing Mojito, a bit of software that uses JavaScript and Node.js to run a single codebase both on client and server side.
Mojito is one of a few Node-centric projects Yahoo’s been brewing. Collectively called Cocktails, they embrace cutting-edge technologies and platforms in a way that is surprising if you haven’t been following developer news from Yahoo over the past couple years.
Yahoo started dabbling in Cocktails a while ago. Bruno Fernandez-Ruiz is Yahoo’s platform vice president, and late last year, he called Cocktails “a bunch of tricks to make web applications feel native.”
Today’s release, Mojito, is a first step in that direction.
“There are some JavaScript frameworks out there, and some of them focus on the server side, some run on the client side,” said Fernandez-Ruiz in a recent phone conversation with VentureBeat. “And we’ve been saying for some time that we want people to

Amazon Appstore generates more revenue than Google Play
Google Play, formerly the Android Market, apparently isn’t pleasing developers in the same way the iOS App Store or even Amazon’s Appstore are. According to data from Flurry Analytics, Amazon generates nearly four times more revenue from in-app purchases than Google Play does.
Flurry compared the iOS App Store, Amazon Appstore and Google Play by first setting iOS revenue to 100 percent since it generates the most. Then the competitors were given their own percentage to represent revenue by comparison. Amazon Appstore came in at 89 percent and Google Play came in at a sad 23 percent. Flurry notes that another way to describe this would be to say that for every dollar iOS apps generate in revenue, Amazon’s app marketplace generates $0.89 and Google Play brings in $0.23.
What’s worse is that in December, the Android Market was generating 24 percent of what the iOS App Store was

Miniclip releases Pictorial for Android
Home » Articles » Miniclip releases Pictorial for Android
Overview
There are tons of Puzzle games in the Android Market, and a new one from MiniClip called Pictorial is one you’ll want to note if you enjoy the genre. Pictorial takes puzzling to new heights, literally as you’ll solve puzzles made out of stars.
The premise behind Pictorial is simple; you‘re given a constellation of stars in the sky which you’ll rotate using your fingers. As you rotate the stars lines will start to appear and a picture will slowly start to emerge. When you it close enough the stars will “lock in” forming the hidden picture and you’ll get to advance to the next level. It’s basically special reasoning at its finest, and it’s surprisingly fun to play. I
